Lychee chinensis ‘Sweatheart’ - Litchi Tree

Lychee chinensis ‘Sweatheart’ - Litchi Tree (Lychee chinensis ‘Sweatheart’ - Litchi Tree)

My Sweetheart litchi tree is finally flushing new growth. It was badly burned during a heatwave back in mid-December. Photo taken on May 10, 2024.

Will it produce fruit eventually? I’ve never seen this before!

I was going to say the same thing, will it bear you some fruit soon, Andy?
Or will it take time to recover?

Cottagekaren,

It will produce fruit one day. It flowered and had little fruit last year, but we had the coolest spring in over 50 years in San Diego and throughout most of California. And all the fruit dropped.

Kate,

It will have to recover from last December’s heatwave. It dried out too much during the heatwave. If it had been watered the leaves and small branches would have burned and died in that heatwave. 😞

I do have a Mauritius variety lychee that’s flowering right now. It looks like it may set some fruit. My longan, (which I love even more than lychee) which is closely related to lychee, has tons of flowers. It should produce a lot of fruit this year.

Good luck with your little tree, Andy! I hope it recovers well, it looks to be doing alright at present.

Thanks for the info, Andy. I do hope it recovers and thrives again.
The Mauritius variety sounds like it’ll produce for you - and of course your Longan sounds like it’s the best of the bunch at the moment, especially as it’s a favourite!

It has completely recovered and looks awesome now! I’m hoping for 3 to 5 new flushes of growth by the end of the year.

Kate,

My Mauritius lychee is in full bloom right now. It may not produce fruit because it’s such a small tree. Lychee trees can be very temperamental.

Good to hear it has fully recovered! I can understand your excitement!
Your Mauritius will still give you pleasure even if it never bears fruit, I'm sure!

I’m very pleased it has recovered well! I just want it to continue to grow fast. Lychee trees are not typically fast growers here in California.

My Mauritius lychee is blooming like crazy. I don’t think it’ll set fruit, though. It’s too young.
