I shall never grow Sunflowers again from seed.

I shall never grow Sunflowers again from seed.

No matter how I have tried to fool the slugs and snails, with coffee grounds, egg shells, grit and even some blue slug pellets, they still wreck them.

So disheartening Shirley 🙁.

Oh blast! What a real pity, sorry to see this happen, Shirley. These pests seem to have some new found powers! Have you tried those steel wire cleaning sponges, unravelled? It was a patient who sold me on the idea. Unravel and place around a plant. Not sure if it works for everything?

I know how you feel Shirley..
Everywhere I look the plants are peppered with holes. The only saving grace are my roses... so clean ...don't think I should have said that !!! Testing fate I fear.

Same here. I'm amazed at what they've chomped through this year!

Sheila, that is precisely the correct word as I have lost seven of them now. The ones remaining are in pots but no doubt the S and S are forming a plan to scale them!

Kate, yes I did unravel one and placed it around the lower part of the stems, they just laughed at it ... :o)

Julia, I just say thanks to them leaving the Geums, Sedums, Welsh Poppies and Hebes alone .Mind you, I have found some huge snails resting within the Sedums.

Ange, it really is unfair!

Sorry about your slug damage Shirley. I have lots of snails & I have had one Sunflower seedling completely eaten off. They are in a pot & the others are ok, at the moment, with the use of slug pellets. I feel guilty though when I see them dying ( the snails) & know that I’m the cause, but what else can we do? There are so many, all different sizes & they eat a hell of a lot. We’d have nothing if we didn’t kill them off.
Commiserations anyway!

Josie, it definitely seems to be a problem for so many of us, all along the South of England. If they start chomping on the Roses I shall scream!

I didn’t know that those blue pellets don ‘t kill off slugs, only the snails. Ty for that info.

Josie, I believe Doff blue pellets are for both slug and snail control. They don't seem to make any difference to the ones munching on my plants!
