Melianthus major

Melianthus major

Honey Bush, native to drier areas of the southwestern Cape in South Africa. Not sure if it will survive in our place but I have seen it in several places on Vancouver Island.
I bought it for its bold leaves that smell like peanut butter and also because it is deer resistant plant..
Flowers are spectacular but time will tell if I will see any
Zone: 8-10 so it is a plant on the edge here

...for my record...

Thank you Bushbernie, Now I'll have to find a spot where it will flourish. We live in a wooded area so its not so easy to find a nice large hot spot for it in full sun. I would love to see it bloom.

I had to google this plant and I can see now why you're impatient to see it flowering. Love the deep crimson-red of the blooms. It grows in the southern states here apparently and is commonly known as the Honey Bush. Maybe it should be re-named - Peanut Butter Bush.

Like BB I also googled the Honeybush...it does seem a very unusual plant Klahanie with such different flowers...Monty Don suggested buying one for
a Valentine!!...

It is a huge plant at maturity Julia. I an still pondering where I will plant it. I do love the colour and shape of the bluish leaves in case that it decides not to bloom.

Bushbernie, I was curious if it grows in your area.
Apparently it is called the Peanut butter bush in some areas.

I've been growing this in the UK for over 20 years. My winter minimum is usually -5C but went down to -10C in 2010/11. I think this is one of those plants that gets hardier as it gets older. To get the flowers, you need to get the top growth through the winter, something I've only managed three times, but it comes back reliably from the roots

Thank you Andrewr for you comment and advise. I think our winters used to be similar to yours but we had -11C last winter which destroyed bunch of my specialty plants.
Is your Melianthus in full sun? Do you know if it will grow in our acidic soil?

I hope your garden is doing well. How are your colchicums this year?
