Asplenium nidus - Bird Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus - Bird Nest Fern)

This is a common fern used in shady places here. This one is growing well at the San Diego Zoo. Photo taken September 27, 2024.

I've a small fernery under my largest Acer and Juniper 'tree'...I'm a big fan of ferns..this is no exception! I've a similar variety, with its lush, shiny fronds.

This one is very tropical, but there’s one that looks pretty similar and it’s very hardy. I think it’s Hart’s Tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium).

The San Diego Zoo is a world-class botanical gardens, and the plants are insured for more than the animals.

It’s quite an incredible zoo and botanical gardens. It has the second largest collection of cycads in North America (Lotusland in Santa Barbara has the largest cycad collection in North America).
