Freshly Pruned Royal Palms

Freshly Pruned Royal Palms (Roystonea regia - Royal Palm)

These royal palms were very recently pruned. They almost appear over pruned. They still look great against the blue San Diego sky. Photo taken November 11, 2024.

What do they do to them? Cut off the lower leaves? They certainly look great against a deep blue sky!

Yes, typically the fronds fall off naturally (self-pruning), but because this is across from the beach the lower fronds typically look dry. This happens in climates with little rainfall to wash the sea salt from the fronds.

The many tall Kentia palms (Howea fosteriana) in the background tolerate salt spray without any problems, because itโ€™s native to very small Lord Howe Island off eastern Australia.
