This beautiful palm tree has become extremely popular in California the last ten years. It’s relatively fast growing and looks like a coconut tree. It was only discovered growing at 3,000 ft elevation in Madagascar in 2007. Photo taken Aug 13, 2024 at Oakland Palmetum.

On Wikipedia there is quite a bit of info on this palm:

It was kind of discovered longer than 20 years ago, but was thought to be a variant of Beccaiophoenix madagascariensis. I did quite a bit of research on this palm about 15 years ago. Because of my horticulture/botany background and being a member of the IPS (International Palm Society) since 1984, it’s just me. 😂

Stan,
I’m not sure how long it’s been growing there. I saw it in 2023 for the first time. I hadn’t been to the Oakland Palmetum in probably 16 or 17 years.

It is a beautiful palm tree, Andy! To think that it was discovered less than 20 years ago & has now become a popular tree in California!
