These Quindío Wax Palms are growing very well at the San Francisco Botanical Gardens. Unfortunately, the weather was foggy, drizzly with showers and cool. So, the pics weren’t too clear. This high elevation palm is the tallest-growing palm in the world growing to more than 200 ft (60 m) in habitat. The seeds for these palm were collected and germinated by my late very good friend, Garrin Fullinton from the Palm Society in 1974. Photo taken February 19, 2025. Also, I believe these palms are the tallest in the U.S.

They are. I wish the weather was clear, because then you can see the waxy white fronds and trunks.

I've seen them a couple of times and with no trunk and what looked to me like not enough watering, they were sort of ugly!
That has really changed and they are the most exotic looking palm we can grow in the bay area. The ugly duckling became a swan.

For over twenty years they didn’t have a trunk, then around 1998 they started developing trunk and took off growing pretty fast. It still takes about 150 plus years to develop a trunk about 200 ft.

They are truly spectacular! There’s some at the Palmetum in Oakland across the bay from San Francisco. The ones at the Palmetum were planted in 1984, I remember when my friend, Garrin planted them, because it was the year I joined the International Palm Society.
