brambles

We must be mad - as if we didn't have enough with our own garden! Today we have come to an agreement with our next door neighbour to use part of his garden. We need space to over winter begonias and to store the tiered baskets etc. My forearms are testimony to the number of brambles and nettles we have cleared today. It's10pm and I am just going to help with the bonfire.

The bottom half of Paul's garden looks like this.
I intend to harvest the blackberries before clearing the brambles. There are not too many nettles, but an awful lot of bindweed :-(

Luckily, we haven't found any bindweed - that's one weed that we dread.
We have found more than 1000 ash trees in various stages of growth. It is worth the effort in clearing the land just to have control over these!

I didn't know what seedling ash trees looked like when I first started helping Paul with his garden. For a few months I was struggling with removing established ones, once they reach 4 or 5 inches tall they certainly resist being uprooted ...... a strong incentive to identify them before they get anywhere near that size ! Now I try to spot them as soon as they appear, even before they produce their first true leaves if I can, and out they come :-D
I shall be soooo pleased when the Ash tree in his front garden comes down. He moved it when it was a sapling, not realising what a nightmare they can be. Its days are numbered because it is growing too close to the main drain.

I admire your ambition. That's scary!

My garden looked like that when I moved in almost 5 years ago, single handedly cleared it up. Now look at it. Therefore I know you will sort it out in no time. best of luck!
