Prickly Pear Cactus

Here is a prickly pear cactus complete with the delicious prickly pear.

Eileen, they are delicious if you can get past the tiny spines that cover each one. There are lots of ways to use the prickly pear once they are harvested. It is also good for what ails ya - so they say. I have tasted the juice and it is good.

I've had those tiny spines in my fingers. You can't get rid of them. They're calles glochids I think.

The Sicilians have a foolproof way of eating this sweet fruit. Skewer the belly part lenghways with a fork and cut each end off with a sharp knife. Then make a cut lengthways, slowly open and fold back both sides of the cut and prise the skin away with the knife tip - if you get the knack, the fruit should plop out with no nasty spines ! Delicious.

Hywel you can get rid of the glochids with sellotape or sticking plaster as long as you haven't broken them off first -I'm sure you knew that really...
