Today I found a Black and Yellow Argiope, also known as a Garden Spider, in the back yard. I havn't seen one in a few years. Notice the zig-zag 'stitch' in the middle of her web. This is to make the web more visible to birds or other things that might hit and damage the web.

These are very common here. We call them Fall spiders cause they build BIG webs in the fall, and fast. Sometimes overnight, you will go out to your car the next morning and it's attached to the tree with the web.

Thanks Marguerite, and yes, the pattern does look like a mask !
Wohlibuli, I'll bet that's quite a morning eye-opener finding your car attached to the huge web like that ! I should go out and measure this web.........it's pretty big Today I checked on her and she had a huge fly for lunch. I'll have to post that pic too.

They are great. I always look for one in the fall, to take to school for the kiddies to see when I do my spider unit. They are so pretty!
