I wouldn't have thought to plant them so close to the window,
but I like the idea of being so close to the garden flowers from indoors.

Thanks again Xela. My 3 year old daughter has been amazed watching these grow from indoors. We have quite a large window and people do tend to look in a lot so I planted these knowing that, we would still be able to see out but people looking in wouldn't really be able to see very much. Its working too!!

I can't see any rust on yours. Mine were badly affected.

Hi everyone.

I didn't know there was such a thing as hollyhock rust. I have googled it now though and realise it is something of a problem. From what I can make out, hollyhocks dont like a rich soil. Mine is medium to heavy clay (and some rubble - my house was only built last year). I planted these (as roots) at the end of April this year . They are planted righ next to the wall as you can see and are definitely open to the elements. My tallest one now is heading for 7'. The only things I have done to them (and the whole of the garden actually) was give them some blood and bone mix once and some miracle grow, not just at the roots but all over the leaves too! Perhaps i'm just lucky but i'll be checking the eaves daily from now on though!!
