Its an annual thats in flower Aug/Sept, related to bindweed but prettier.

Does it spread alarmingly,
like bindweed,
or can you keep it to one area?
For instance, is it a good idea,
to grow it in a pot?

yes best to grow in a pot it may self seed, so be careful
