Our boy Jack, an 8-year-old Australian Cattledog. He had to have surgery this summer since he felt the need to eat parts of a beat-up tennis ball he found in the yard. In this photo, his fur isn't quite grown back on his legs where they shaved for an IV. Crazy dog!

beautifull dog, are they closely related to alsations?

Islander ~ good question.
I can see exactly why looking at Jack you might think he's related to the Alsatian aka German Shepherd Dog.
The Australian Cattle Dog is aka Queensland Heeler. It has been a distinct breed for over a century. Breeds incorporated into the development of this dog include Collie, Bull Terrier and Dingo.
I'm sure Charlieb will add this. The breed is very smart, both in appearance and intelligence.

Thanks Islander and TT for your input. I'm no expert on dogs, but we did get a book on ACDs when we got him. His lineage is as you state. Dalmation was also added early on, hence the spots. Yeah, he's pretty smart and very active. We wouldn't have got him if we had still lived in the city. Thankfully he outgrew trying to herd us like he used to when he was young! lol

have a cousin who had a blue Heeler...he lover her and tells story after story of her intelligence and wonderful attributes... He's not as impressed with the dog he found to do his cattle work. She's a BH too, but he says she can't hold a candle to his first. Some dogs just take up residence in our hearts and they become the stuff of legend... Jack looks like he is one of those!

Yeah, we'll probably be the same, telling stories about him. Both my husband and I are crazy about Jack, he's like our kid. Sometimes we think he's too smart - he's so intuned to what we're saying and what's going on! LOL But he has his little quirks too, as all of us do I guess. : D

It's nice to hear about a working dog! My pup is just the queen of sheba...(or so she thinks!) but I love her an unreasonable amount!!lol.
