I'm sure you are speaking about Caryota mitis which is a cespitose (clustering) palm. This species has many stems (trunks) and when one dies there are many others left and many new stems grow.

Caryota unrens, no, cumingii, and gigas are single stemmed palms and after they bloom they need to be replaced...although, there are usually hundreds of thousands of seeds produced and generally many seedlings grow underneath the dying trees.

How beautiful and such a shame they die after flowering.
