This is the most widely planted dwarf palm in California. They are planted in all Coastal areas of California.

Do they produce dates in your area D? We just picked up one of these for the garden. The lady at the garden center said that is is not hot enough for them to produce here even if you have both genders of them.

Gardengem, I can't believe that you would not get enough heat for P. roebelenii to produce fruit. Florida has such a hot and humid climate most of the year...I'm not sure if I would believe this person.
Yes, they produce fruit here, however, the fruit isn't really edible. Not enough meat so to speak. The true Date Palms (Phoenix dactylifera) do produce edible fruit here though. Dates are commercially grown in the Coachella Valley about 80 miles Northeast of San Diego.

You are correct these trees are dioecious...however, Phoenix is called the "whore" of the plant kingdom because the female Phoenix will accept pollen from any male Phoenix species, and therefore, it hybridizes easily. There are so many hybrid crosses that are grown in California. It is a challenge trying to identify them most of the time.
