I believe this is a female plant. Unfortunately, this picture doesn't show how orange the cones really are.

Are these the ones that date back to prehistoric times? I seem to recall seeing somewhere it is one of the oldest known plants that are still here today.

Yes, they are from the Jurassic period. There were more genera back then...many genera have dyed off over the eons.
