American Piller Rose

Is this called American Pillar ?

Yes this is the American Piller, very strong grower, very savage with strong thorns, but well worth the trouble, Our village has them all around and the church yard walls are decked with them, they flower once in July although this year there have been suprisingly quite a few flowers reappearing. They keep them pruned low to top the wall, I am inclined to let mine grow up through the trees and along the fences. By the way Hywel, you have a good welsh name. Our son is called Hywel too, Hywel Dda (Hywel the Good)!!

Ah yes - a good name I agree.
I have this rose too. I took a cutting from my old garden when I moved and it's about 9 ft tall now. It has nasty thorns.
By the way, what part of Wales do you live ?

By the way I see you like sketching. I took up Oil painting just before retiring and I write poetry, I have published a book of my poems which I illustrated with my paintings and drawings. Gone a bit lazy these days dont, look for the painting commissions any more, still write a poem or two now and again for occassions and when a topic stirs me. But these twilight days I enjoy my garden and the fresh air. My book is called "Lest We Forget" Hunting and Country Verse.
