From what I can dig up Calz, I've read that the rhizomes are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of tonsilitis, infected nostrils and fever. The leaves are also used to reduce pain and swelling in stiff and sore joints. Its flower buds are edible and can be used like a vegetable,or salad garish.
One site says that the root, when cooked, is used as a famine food when all else fails...lol. So I'm thinking, it must taste pretty nasty.

So, is it the same ginger we buy for our pumpkin pie mix? Beautiful flowers...

Skippy I believe the commercial ginger you buy at the supermarket, or grocery stores are Zingiber officinale ginger, from the zingiberacea plant family. Mine are edible, but apparantly, just barely...lol

Aleyna, they probably are the same, this one is hedychium coronarium 'Elizabeth', also have a cultivar called 'Anne Bishop' which dissappointing looks almost idential to the other one. Funny, it didn't look that similar in the catalog I purchased them from...wonder how that happens ! There are also yellow flowering cultivars too.
