Foxhollow Garden View

I love this garden especially the way the lawn sweeps round the beds giving the impression of an even bigger plot than what it is.

Do you follow a plan when you plant up the borders or do you have a natural eye for fitting them in in exactly the right place?

Tna2 - No plan. always liked the idea of large island beds, and regarding the plants it's all about creating as much contrast with form, texture and colour as possible, but having said that I am forever renewing and moving plants around, never satisfied and always trying to improve things.

Hi Bluespruce, may I ask, are the plants in this garden basically all conifers, or can I see a few heathers in there?

Dawn - The main plants in the garden are conifers now totaling over 1100 different varieties, there are also many grasses and heathers throughout the garden, although over the last couple of years I have been removing many of the heathers.

Wow, that's alot of conifers. Can I presume your soil is acid? Are you removing the heathers as they are past their sell by date? I see you have neatly mulched between the plants - is this bark chippings, if so you must get through loads. I sound very nosey, dont I.! Dawn PS. I'm still amazed at the beauty of the garden

Dawn - yes it's a lot of conifers, it's also a passion and the collection increases by 100+ every year, space is becoming a premium, and that's one of the reasons I am removing a lot of the heathers, plus they do become a bit tired and struggle to grow well when in competition with other trees and shrubs. The soil is acidic sand and the mulch is composted wood chippings I get delivered for free from a local tree surgeon.
Don't think your nosey, I'm always happy to sing the praises of conifers when I can, too many people give them a bad name for my liking.

Hi Bluespruce, by your beautiful gardens it just goes to proof how wonderful conifers are. Let's hope they "come back in fashion" in the near future. I remember in the 1980's conifers were so popular and you've renewed my interest in them. Your soil sounds fabulous, we on the other hand are on clay (wet). Time is a bit of a problem for us but I really want to create a conifer bed now, even if its only an island bed. Can I presume your beds look similar all year round. Thank you

Hi Dawn - Of course the main structure of the garden with all the conifers is always there, and it will always look similar but never the same. There is always something going on with the colour changes of many of the conifers, winter flowering heathers taking over from summer ones, autumn colours from deciduous trees and shrubs winter hues from the grasses etc. Which for me is what I want from a garden, I can't stand the thought of not having plants around me 12 months of the year.

a beautiful garden and stunning colours, have always been a great fan of conifers, dating back to Foggy Bottom remember Adrian and Alan Bloom? I grew a lot in the midlands, not so much here because of the salt winds. So I will be content to admire yours.

Adrian Bloom was my original inspiration in starting to collect conifers on a serious basis over twenty years ago, and have visited both Foggy Bottom and the Dell garden at Bressingham many, many times since. Unfortunately it's not quite the same as it used to be in my opinion, but still always worth a visit.
