This is the one that I cut hard back in May. It has been flowering really well.

u say u cut this hard back in May Spritz ! was it in2 woody sections? As iv a old White Hebe thats been in my garden since i moved in &its very Woody with no leafs lower down ? Id like to get leafs lower down but didnt know if it would of killed the Hebe cutting in2Woody Branches? :)

I waited until May, and cut it back to the new growth coming from near the base. I must have cut off at least half, if not more! I needed to use my pruning saw - some of the branches were much too thick for even loppers. It was very floppy before and tied in to a pole with wire, but now it is much more compact and upright. I've got several more that are old and need doing - this was an experiment. It worked! Guess what I shall be doing in May 2009!

You're welcome! Hope it works for you. We'll both be out sawing pieces off our Hebes come next May!
One hint that I always remember that our tree surgeon said to me - 'Cut back in small steps, and stand back to see what it looks like before you cut any more. You can't stick it back on once you've cut it'!
I find that advice very helpful. Hope you do too. .
