Do you let Bambi out the cage, my budgie liked to follow me all over the house.

Bambi has proved extremely difficult to train, she's a very stubborn budgie and can be vicious. I'm usually the one that deals with her since she doesn't bite me (at least, not so hard!). Even last night at the vets she clamped her beak onto her cuttlefish and was not intending to leave her cage, then bit the vet hard while shrieking loudly, and that's when she's very sick.
I never managed to get her even finger trained, but she will tolerate my hand near her usually. All the houses we have lived in have been open plan, no doors to block off rooms she is in, so I really wanted her at least finger trained before she came out and it never happened. She really is happy just to be in her cage and sing and chat to everybody around!
Other budgies I have had were much friendlier and those did come out, fly around and perch on whoever was around.
Bambi even has a note on her vet file that she can be vicious - but we love her dearly!

Well good on ya Bambi, you must have the spirit of Ned Kelly also from Oz, armed and extremely dangerous.

Very pretty color even if she is a biter...

Bless little Bambi.
Female budgies have stronger beaks than the males and can inflict more damage and be less good natured !
Sounds like Bambi is a wonderful character.
Eleven years old is a good age for a budgie.
Some budgies do prefer to just shout at everyone from their cage.
My Crocus budgie is like that. Absolutely loves being in his cage playing with his toys, throwing his ladder down, and generally doing what I call "rearranging his furniture".
Bambi is lucky to have had such wonderful owners. :o)

Just a warning ....... we have a friend who is carrying an oxygen cylinder around all the time , she even has to use it in her sleep , she has been very ill for a long time , there is nothing they can do to help or cure her , the illness is caused by something passed on to them by Budgies .!

Thanks for the warning. I have heard there are some people super sensitive to budgie droppings and there can be problems, but I think you realise pretty soon after getting one. Don't know if that's the same problem or not?

Gillian, did you have Bambi from being a youngster?I used to breed budgies and it was always said that to train a budgie thye needed to be just fledged and the male ones are easier to finger train than the females.

What was suggested was to slowly move the hand near to the birds chest and to gentle stroke the bird with the index finger until the bird was comfortable with it,then to slowly move towards the feet.If slight pressure was then used the bird if you was lucky would then walk onto your finger and you could slowly draw the bird out of the cage.If you talked to it while this was happening it had a calming effect.

Male birds could if you were lucky be taught to talk by repeating the same word over and over again until hopefully it picked it up.

Yes female budgie bites are not very nice especially when you need to clip their claws..ouch

Perhaps when this one is no longer with you and you get another one you might have more success...

We had Bambi from about six weeks old, and training techniques like you suggested (and had used successfully in the past) would just not work on this one. She clearly runs on her own agenda! She will do the tail lifting/mating type gesture with me though......

Sorry to hear of the passing away of Bambi Gillian but she had a good life with you and that should give you comfort.

Somehow this seems a very appropriate last picture of her, just going to sleep.
We buried her in the garden yesterday with her favourite toy and next spring we'll choose a plant in her sort of colours to plant there.

Bambi looks very cosy in this photo.
Your family is wonderful the way you cared for her to the very end. :o)

This picture of Bambi will stay on here in her memory, all the other budgie pictures are now on a blog.
