Found out today from a chap who belongs to a fungi society that this is the collared earth star. One of about 16 varieties.

At a quick glance it looks like an old apple on marble.

Wonderful thing, T&T! There is another type where the points of the star go down and actually push it up off the ground so it appears to stand on legs! Think its probably to get the spores higher up so they travel further. Not seen this collared sort, but then I've only ever once found one in the woods :-)

Hi
I love funghi's they are so unusual. I will be buying some spores in the future and trying to get some to grow in a little log pile I have. On a serious note, this year at the Botanical Gardens in Ventnor (Isle of Wight) some inexperienced mushroom pickers thought they would collect what they thought were edible wild mushrooms to cook, but they turned out to be deadly poisonous, one of the women died and the other has serious organ damage.
Washing hands has to be the best advice and don't eat anything that you are not sure of x
