The label says 'Oncidium'

The label says 'Oncidium'

My daughter was given this about 6 weeks ago. On one stem the flowers have died but seem OK on the second stem. All the leaves look healthy. Some at the base are very, very thick! It is in quite a small pot for its height and some roots are showing above the soil. Daughter is not plant-friendly and has now passed it to me. I thought it was an orchid until I read the label - or are they the same thing? Tried looking it up on the site and ended up more confused than ever! Have posted a second picture of the whole thing. Help would be appreciated.

I copied this from wikipedia:

"Oncidium, abbreviated as Onc in horticultural trade, is a genus that contains about 330 species of orchids from the subfamily Epidendroideae of the orchid family (Orchidaceae). This is a complex, difficult genus, with many species being reclassified. Calls are made for splitting this genus into multiple genera."

Hope it helps. This is very beautiful.

Beautiful Oncidium orchid Gee19. It's said that orchids don't like to get their feet wet. A rule for orchids in general is to not let them sit in water, they will develop root rot. Remember in the wild they're epiphytes; ( a plant that derives its moisture and nutrients from the air and rain and usually grows on another plant) hanging from a tree for example, where they get good drainage. They originate in the rainforets and the tropics where there's lot of humidty. Therefore most like/need humidity, especially in hotter weather. This can be obtained through spray misting or by placing a saucer underneath w/ pebbles. Add water to the saucer but just below the top of the pebbles. This way the roots aren't in contact with the water. Here's a link to oncidium orchid care. Hope that it's helpful:

Oncidiums are a little tempermental, but they do rebloom for me. If you want an easy orchid to grow you should get a Phalaenopsis or sometimes called 'Moth' orchid. They are easy to grow, always rebloom for me and the flowers last for months. I have one that was in bloom for 7-8 months. The flowers finally died off , so I trimmed the spike, just to where it was brown and dry and it popped out more flowers. They're very rewarding and beautiful. Good luck :)

Thanks for such a wealth of information. I will go onto the link, too. Hopefully I can help this plant survive for as long as possible.
