If you look towards the bottom of the flowering stem there is a very white root growing upwards. Is this normal!?

Yes the white root is normal.In the wild they use these ariel roots to anchor themselves to the hoast tree where they are to be found in their natural habitat.Lovely colour...

Nice colour and healthy looking. I have some orchids on the kitchen window sill and the aerial roots are trying to make it down into the sink!
