Our garden is 1/3 acre approx. It is the standard size for a village house in Hungary. Many years ago they calculated that a family needed a garden this size to support the family. All the neighbours continue this tradition with grape vines and vegetable gardens, plus chockens, geese and sometimes a pig. Then in the Autumn they kill the pig, and the whole family make salami. It's quite a tradition. Our house has an outhouse which the previous owner told us was the pig killing room!
