Yes, on the frost. Some perennials just shine on frosty morns. Lady's mantle and such. In the Pacific Northwest, when the rain forest and moss are coveredwith ice or snow, it is magical. Sadly I have no such pictures. Only memories.

We are coming to such a time. A major National Weather warning has been posted for a major arctic outflow that will last a week. I may have nothing better to do than take photos. Snow, Gales, Ice and seven days of highs at freezing and below.

I suppose that frost is useful, really. I know it kills off nasties, helps some seeds to germinate and looks pretty, too - but boy! it's so ccccold and the greenhouse heaters gobble up money!

I know it is expensive we are ok as we are a hardy nursery our days of heating bills have gone:)
My dad and brother have a nursery and they have massive heating bills they are begonioa specialists they used to grow poincettias and that was very expensive with all the lights as well as heating running the generator in power cuts etc.
My brother is a plant breeder also he has bred some penstemon etna, vesuvius, kilamagaro etc
Phygelius funfare yellow, orange, wine and cream, erigeron sea breeze,begonia millon kisses to name but a few

i love miscanthus when they are covered in frost ooo lovely:)

My miscanthus is only a piece chopped off one my friend split in the summer - but it managed to produce three flowers, none the less, so I have hopes that it will clump up! She doesn't know its name - only that it's M. sinensis.

My Stipa gigantea looks great in the frost, though!

We planted some grasses last year mainly different miscanthus a stipa and a couple of others along a hawthorn hedge under planted with crocosmia it get very hot there and is in the wind Not muc else seemed to like it there.
they are much bigger this year and I have high hopes for next year the red barrons look great too when the sun shone through them they look fab really red I have planted 5 of those around one of my miscanthus.
I also bought a pyrus I know its not as hardy but I thought I would be daring and give it a go!
We will have to see if it ever makes it into the ground let alone survives the winter!!!
We planted a restio also but that took all year to come back Its so small!
I didnt think they were hardy but a friend of ours specialises inthem and he said this one was......well only just :) noy sur that it will see another spring lol:)

You have to push the boundaries in gardening, don't you. Otherwise, if we all planted 'safe' plants, it would be boring!
