You have yours in the bathroom Lori? have you tried feeding?

Up until this winter it has been in the bathroom...just for the humidity..and the bath is the warmest room in the house with few drafts. Now, my orchids are housed in my little indoor greenhouse.
It fell out of it's pot a while back when I brought it into the house (it spent the summer in the shade porch) and I think it had a little setback on both accounts...but it seems to be responding positively to the greenhouse and the grolites...Yes I do fertilize but not with every watering...I use an orchid mixture with a higher phosphorus content... same treatment as the others which are blooming...but it appears to want to assert it's self. I must be patient.

to be honest Lori, i do think they benefit from a little cold spell, as long as not damp as well. mine are in the bathroom all year round and it is cold in there unless you are actually having a bath, and mine flower without fail about every 12-18 months, and the flower can go on as long as 6 months at a time. also they do ok in the flower shop i work and that is very cold in the winter, we do keep them out the back of a night which is remotely warmer, but no central heating at all, and i think this is the thing with winter, central heating not cold.

That is interesting, Majeeka... these orchids are coastal rainforest epiphytes...and as such I wouldn't imagine that there is much cold weather in their natural environment...wonder if the shock-into-bloom effect of cold temps is a natural trait or if it is latent and was discovered by plant breeders when placed in northern environments...? I think I'm going to go research that and see what the inet experts say... I'll let you know what I find.

Majeeka...I found mention of an organization called the International Phalaenopsis Alliance...and googled it... found that there is an International Orchid show at Peterborough (UK) in June... (20-22 I think) Thought you might be interested in looking this up...

Thanks Lori, doubt i will be able to get there though, my little monkey does'nt travel too well, and it's quite a way off from us. and just to add to the comments about cold temps, i know what you are saying, but can only speak from experience here, my bathroom has and open vent in it, which becomes extraction fan when you turn the light on, so if you are in there it is warm, there is a rad in there too, but the other side of the room, to my orchids. and it's only on very low, but if no one is in there this vent makes the temp as if you have window wide open. obvioulsy frost free. but in the shop in the recent cold spell as i said before we have the orchids our the back of a night where it is warmer than in the shop, but the shop did go below freezing, because when we come in the next day the buckets of water were frozen, boss was not happy as lost a lot of cut flower stock. but the orchids were fine! so you tell me?
