The see-through tree

The see-through tree

This little willow is hollow but still was full of leaves during the summer. I really don't know how it is surviving and just hope it doesn't fall down into my garden!!

If this was in my garden I would plant something in the hole.

It's on council owned land by the village pond but I could sneak out one night and try to plant something (except I might fall in the ditch beside it). It's completely hollow on the other side of the trunk. Earlier it was full of fungi (see earlier picture). It will be interesting to see if it flourishes again this coming summer.

It might be worth letting the council know about the state of the tree (if they don't already). They have a duty of care to the residents

It looks very old.

We have a village tree warden who goes round checking the trees and he informs the council. Didn't prevent three large branches falling on my garden on separate occasions over the last 8 years!! I will be seeing the warden at the end of the month so I will mention it to him.

I had a lovely peice of bark once with a hole in it. I stapled a sandwihch bag to the back abd filled it full of soil, then planted two sempervivums in it. It looked great and lasted ages.
Unfortunately when I moved I had to leave it behind because a robin decided to build a nest in it.

Always on the look out for another peice. If they ever do chop this willow down, make sure you are around to grab the best bit.

Wow, isnt' that amazing. Willows are very tenacious, it may well flourish.

Good advice from Trees and Things, to grab some interesting pieces, if the tree is cut down for safety reasons.
