This looks like your black Bamboo. (Gee - it's called Phyllostachys nigra if you want to look it up).

It is, when I bought it it it was at the end of a show and I paid £50.00 for the bamboo and two Acers. now have a smaller black bamboo in a pot.
This photo was after I thined all the little spindle shoots out.
When I uploaded the photo it wouldnt let me edit the page, just kept saying sorry we have a problem.

They look superb when they are trimmed out like this.

The book says "remove any weak or spindly growth as soon as it appears above the ground." This is to promote growth where it is needed in the large stronger shoots.
Also remove the lower leaves up to 3ft. (To show off the stem colour).

I started to remove the lower growth before the ice arrived - I think I'll wait to finish the job after it's gone, now.
