Pterospermum acerifolium‎ - Maple Leaved Buyar

Pterospermum acerifolium‎ - Maple Leaved Buyar (Pterospermum acerifolium‎ - Maple Leaved Buyar)

This rare tree in California is probably the largest of its kind in So. CA...being over 60 feet / 20 meter tall. It is native to Southern India, Ceylon and Burma. It has beautiful two-toned large evergreen leaves. The under side of the leaf is silvery-white and felt-like.

It is becoming slighly more available in some specialty nurseries here in Southern California: and is even rare in Miami, Florida from what I've read. I don't think it's even common in Hawaii.

Marguerite,

Thanks for all the information, there's not much information on this tree on the internet.

I've seen this tree on the internet listed Bayur and Buyur...I'm not exactly sure if it one or the other, or both. I'll have to check my photo of the metal/plastic name tag which is located under this tree in Balboa Park.

My friend in Northern San Diego County purchased 5 of thee trees in the Los Angeles area at a specialty nursery. I'm not sure where this grower is getting their plants source or seeds (maybe India?). I know I've purchased many of my rarer exotic seeds from India for a very reasonable price.

I've seen this tree bloom and it seems to seed, however, I have not obtained any seeds. I also, don't see any seedlings growing under this large tree...so it's possible it doesn't bear viable seed or it's just too dry for the seeds to germinate.

How large do these trees grow in Cairns?
I know their potential height is a very tall 100 feet/30 meters.
