This is one of the many orchids in the botanical building blooming this month. It is difficult to take a good photo in the botanical building because it's just a very large lath-house. The sun shines through the wooden lathes. Pic taken January 17, 2009.

Gilli,
The Botanical Building used to be called The Lath Palace when it was originally built for the Panama Exposition in 1915 in Balboa Park, San Diego. It was the largest lath structure when it was originally built. It's dimensions are 250 feet / 76 meters long and 75 feet / 23 meters wide and 60 feet / 19 meters tall. Steel trusses in vaults and dome support 70,000 feet of redwood lath, which is curved to conform to the shape of the building. It is truly one of the World's largest and most impressive lath-houses.
