I have this plant myself...it has flowered for many years...however, this year it didn't bloom. This Genus tends to grow as an epipyte in nature.
You may have the Medinilla magnifica...which is even more beautiful than this species because it has large pink bracts before it flower and during flowering. It is ULTRA tropical and I don't know of any growing outside in San Diego. It doesn't like temps below 65 degrees F. / 18 degrees C. and may be cold-damaged below this temp.
