Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi is easy to grow, although with our late start to the season here in Nova Scotia, we have to get them going indoors in late April, early May. These veggies are delicious, but you have to catch them young - no more than 15 cm across the globe, otherwise they will be woody. Slice and steam, then slather with a light cream sauce, or cut into wedges and roast with other veggies. Good raw too, with a dip. Photo was taken in late July.

Hi Elke ~
Do you do a lot of cooking ?
Seems like you are as successful in the kitchen as in the garden ! :o)

We started too late last year, so we bought seedlings at the local nursery. However, this year we'll get them started indoors. Or in a cold frame if my husband gets round to building one. Friends have had excellent results with seeds. But plant plenty, and start the seeds in weekly batches, otherwise all the bulbs ripen at the same time, there's only so much kohlrabi you can eat, and then you end up giving them away. We have very appreciative friends and neighbours as a result.

LOVE to cook, that's why our veggie harden is so important, but I only bake for company these days, no more kids around to eat it all up, and we only put on the lbs at our age. There's a tradition here in Nova Scotia to hold regular card parties, and we belong to a group of 12-14 friends, meet once a week to play a version of Canasta for fun, take turns at our respective homes and serve dessert & coffee beforehand, or nibbles throughout when we are on a 'health' kick. Sometimes we have a pot luck dinner, or a themed dinner - last year we put on a South African evening with SA dishes and a slide show of our stay there. All our 3 kids love to cook too.

Much milder than turnip. A fresher flavour. But I'll post a recipe for a "I'll never believe this is turnip" baked puff.
