I've only ever seen an eagle in the zoo - or as part of a 'Birds of Prey' team. Are they quite common?

The bald eagles are common in Alaska and some places in our northwest, but not where I am. I am always thrilled to see one.

Gorgeous shot Weeds! I remember eagles as much more rare when I lived in Idaho, though there are more with more lakes in the north country. In Alaska there is no shortage at all. This makes me very reminiscent of times past. Thanks. :-)

The Bald Eagle has started to make a come back after the ban of DDT. They like to live near large bodies of water and large rivers as their main food is fish. We used to go watch them along the Arkansas River when visiting my mother in Oklahoma. They are amazing birds!

Thanks, everyone. Yes I remember that DDT was a problem with eagles a long time ago. Also longer ago they were grouped with other preditors hunted by farmers and ranchers to protect their livestock. More recently they have been protected with a huge fine if you even had feathers in your possession. They are no longer protected here.
We have a group of eagles that migrate from your home state, Greenthumb, down to Coeur d'Alene Lake near here in Idaho. Probably because the water stays open.
We had a pair nesting in the cliffs above our home when we were living in the mountains. It was interesting to watch them teach their young to fly. They made a terrible racket just like any other birds coaxing their young to leave the nest.

Bald eagles are plentiful around here. They are here pretty much year round. They sit in the dead trees along the Thompson River and fish, which is about 2 blocks away from our house. The other day one was circling overhead when Molly was outside. I brought her in pretty quick!!

Wise move. We have a similar problem with owls.

Yeah...the Great Horned Owls will take cats and small dogs just like the eagles. There was a Great Horned Owl hooting in our spruce tree this evening. He/she was being answered from a tree further afield. I assume that he/she was looking for a mate.

We let our furs out after a certain size.....the eagles roost and hunt from a tree right here..you've seent them Weed's......they are back again...must be following the salmon...

I'm not sure what kind of owls we have here. I don't hear them in the winter. When the kids were little there was one in the barn alot, maybe after rock doves that live there too. Our neighbors had to call animal control to free one that was in a manlift bucket; he couldn't spread his wings wide enough to fly or hop out.

Cat, yes, I remember how Dave used to love to watch them. They must have nest there too.They used to carry big sticks.

I'm pleased you've left my kitties in Wales then you two.......don't fancy Roly being hoisted into an eyrie! lol

Kitties live in well guarded luxury here...and are very safe...so when Roly and Abigail Tabbytail come to visit they will have a very enjoyable time...Larry and Mary Jane are looking forward to it...MaryJane is sitting above my shoulder as I write this so she may carry stories to Larry when he comes in off the deck..he is having his morning thrill of first bird song of the day......as to Roly being hoisted anywhere...the Eagles simply are not that big here....

LOL!!! When Abby is living at home, she has a body guard and watch cat dressed all in black by the name of Fritter. No vicious low-life eagle would dare touch a hair on her pretty head when Fritter is on his watch. I'm sure he will guard Ol' Roly, the light of Abby's life, too.

Awww...they are not anymore sinister than a red tail hawk going after a mouse of a seagull going after a crab...they are as much a scavenger as a hunter...they love fish...and duck...same as us...more likely to go after some other animals if they think their nests or babies are threatened some how by them...

The eagle in this picture is near a large river so he is probably fishing,too, but the first day I saw him up there he was feeding on a deer that had been killed by a car.
