Hi Marguerite. The hanging pots are full of my balsam and sapphire blue plants. I find I can't grow the balsam (impatiens) in the ground - dries out too quickly usually. Yes there is an automatic watering system which you can probably just see - that long black pipe on the beam above the pots.

Thanks Youngdaisydee, yes the greenhouse is longer than the photo shows. The other end is where I do my potting and it is covered with ferns too at the moment.

Yes Sueb my greenhouse provides a cool spot to grow many plants which would not survive out in the garden, especially during our horrible summers. It also provides a break from the heat of the western sun and the winds we get around here. It's a lovely place to potter around in when the sun's gone down - quite cool!

So its not a hothouse then Bernieh. Its a coolhouse?

Yes you're right there Gilli. The way we use greenhouses over here in north Queensland is a little bit different to the way there are generally used. They are covered in shadecloth that blocks out most of the sun's UV rays and they are therefore a little cooler than the outdoors. My greenhouse is attached to the western facing wall of my house and it makes a noticeable difference to the temps on that side of the house.

I never even considered that it would be too hot to have a greenhouse as such. I've learnt something now.

It is interesting Lindak how things such as greenhouses are used differently - hot houses are definitely not needed here in the northern tropics, but cooler places for plants to grow and/or become established are needed. As I explained in previous comments greenhouses are built so that the sun's UV rays are kept out and it provides a cooler place for plants.
