Plenty of Food But No Birds

Plenty of Food But No Birds

Apart from hungry Collared Doves, Wood Pigeons and Starlings, we haven't seen many birds feeding from the table by the window recently

Sometimes the absence of birds is because a neighbour has produced a new bird table with different bird food. ! The small birds are trying out the menu at a 'new restaurant'. They'll come back :o)

Paul, we are in Essex too, and we have found that they are not eating the seed we put out either at the moment. but we have seen them pecking about in the hedges and shrubs. Maybe as TT says, they are after something else at the moment......

There are farm fields just behind us and if there is plenty of food available in the hedgerows, they don't always visit the garden feeders but there is a 30 ft long, 8 ft high conifer hedge next door so there's always plenty of birds around. The Starlings are certainly devouring the fat blocks in the hanging feeders. We have heard the foxes around the conifer hedges at night times recently, so perhaps the birds are lying low! We'll just have to be patient.

Great feeder Paul and I agree with toonie!
The dependble starlings!! I know they need to eat too but I'm afraid they are not on my 'like' list! Greedy rude little buggers!

Yes, I know what you mean but I've warmed to them a bit more since living here(6years) because they're our main feathered visitors. They are very greedy but they make me smile when 3 or 4 of the get in the small bird bath together. The first few times it happenned we thought it was raining as there was water flying everywhere. They are entertaining even if a bit thugish!

A few days after this, the snow came and I actually spotted a Robin on the table which is highly unusual, ha usually eats from my ground feeders under my side garden shrubs but trhey were all coverd in snow.,

Our thugish birds are magpies and we have a permanent family nearby. They are a definite threat to the little birds. This year we have noticed our two resident robins are actually feeding from the hanging feeders. They love the fat balls, and recently a goldcrest has joined in. We also have a group of long tailed tits. Don't worry, Paul the birds will come it just takes time. We thought they would never turn up but now word has got round but the little birds do seem to be intimidated by the larger ones. My husband lowered the roof of our table so that the larger birds couldn't land on it. Mind you we did have fun watching them try to.
