Beautiful frog. When I had a pond I used to love lying in bed at night and hearing the first croakings of the year. Your photos keep stirring up memories for me :)

It's a lovely sound isn't it? We hear it all the time at the right time of year. Won't be long now.

Thanks Sewingkilla,The common frog of which this is an example does hibernate throughout the winter months and may do so beneath the mud at the bottom of ponds or under piles of leaves, logs or other vegetation. They may also hibernate in places such as compost heaps. Once the frogs have spawned somewhere between January and April (depending on which part of the country you are in) they tend to leave the water and live mainly on land where they feed on invertebrate life such as slugs, flies and other insects. This makes them a good friend of the gardner. Having said this, I regularly see frogs in the pond throughout the summer months. If you want lots of frogs in your garden pond it is best not to keep fish as these consume the spawn, tadpoles and young frogs. Frogs have many predators from blackbirds to herons, grass snakes and the domestic cat,and this added to the number killed on roads means that very few of the eggs laid ever make through to adult frogs.
