What's happening now?

Henry won't venture into the stream once it gets as high and fast-running as this.

Very sensible Henry , you could get carried away !

certainly captured Henry's interest, does this stream run through your garden?

9 Feb, 2009

Oooooh, yes! Normally, we enjoy it very much and so does Henry. I am a bit nervous of it at the moment, though!
When it leaves our garden, it runs alongside the lane and across it (a ford) and the stream has flooded the lane today. The postman left his van the other side of the ford and walked!
Sometimes, the village gets cut off in both directions - except for farmers in their tractors. The water level drops just as quickly as it rises, though - usually!

I think you and I could talk about streams running through gardens for quite some time Spritz, they are lovely, most of the time arent they. We've had problems with getting other people's water since the hedges (with ditches) were cleared in the fields behind us.

We keep an eye on the tide tables, as they have an effect, and of course after heavy rain! There seems to be a set of sluice gates somewhere - we haven't established where they are - and they have, we're told, been made to work. So we are hoping that they will help the problem.

That's helpful for you then Spritz, dont you find though that the level of water has increased so much these last few years. When I was a child, our brook was just a trickle in the summer. We've had the Environmental Agency out what with one thing and another. They gave me a leaflet called "Living On The Edge" for people like us that have brooks - let me know if you'd like a copy.

We've only been here 4 years, Dawn, we know that next door has been flooded as they are slightly lower than we are, but a number of years ago.

Our predecessors said that our house hadn't been flooded while they lived here (18 years).
Since we've been here, we have had flooded lawns and the lanes into the village impassable four times (same brook).

Could you please let me know how to get that leaflet? Sounds useful.

Luckily our house has always been safe but the lawns get flooded when we have a heavy storm and the brook keeps on rising well after the rain has stopped but as we said earlier, the water does disappear quickly. I have the booklet here, it says, "If you own land or property alongside a river or other watercourse, this guide is for you". Apparently in legal terms we are Riparian Owners.
Its an Environment Agency booklet named - living on the edge. Tel No. 08708 506 506 or email: enquiries@environment-agency.gov.uk, website: www.environment-agency.gov.uk. Or I can photocopy if for you :-)
