Fishtail Palms, Shaving Brush Palm, Nikau Palm and Mexican Fan Palm...and of course the Eucalyptus trees in the background. This is in one small section of Palm Canyon in Balboa Park.

To the left there's a King Palm Forest (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana and alexandre)

Love all the tree names ! I looked up Shaving Brush Palm. That's the row of trees along the lower right half of the photo ? Yes ? I looked up Nikau palm and that is similar shape ? :o)

Could you explain, please, which is which left to right. LOL. Thanks.

Terratoonie:

It is really difficult to see the difference between the Nikau and Shaving Brush palms in this photo. The Shaving Brush palm has a more round/bulbous crownshaft - Nikau Palms have a longer, smoother less bulbous crownshaft. Also, the leaflets are thinner on the Shaving Brush Palm.

In order to see what I mean I will have to take a close up of the two palms and post them separately. There's a huge difference when viewed up close plus the Nikau Palm grows much taller up to 50 feet/ 15 meters tall and has larger fronds overall.

To make things more confusing...there could be an occasional Rhopalostylis cheesmanii - Kermadec Palm (from Norfolk Island) in this collection of palms which looks closer to Rhopalostylis baueri (I know - it's like opening a can of worms!) LOL.

Wow, that does sound more complicated than I was anticipating.
Thank you for the detailed answer. :o)
