Thanks for your kind comments, and don't worry, Toto, he/she will be well fed. Have to tell you though that I cheated a bit on this photo. It was taken against the sun, on Auto, so with iPhoto's help I cropped it and altered the exposure and contrast a bit so we can actually see some of the details... Please forgive me.
Luckily we don't have any grey squirrels here - the reds have been all but wiped out in Eastern Canada by the greys, so we were pleased to find the opposite situation down here on the coast. I think they are cute, and I treasure them. However, most people around here consider them pests and are not so kind to them. I guess if I had them nesting in my roof space and chewing insulation and wiring I might feel the same!

Thanks for all the info Elke...never thought for a moment youre not looking out for all this wildlife.We here would be shocked to find reds regarded as a pest..as our greys are.But just love them all...and dont discriminate !

Debrah - when I was a small child I had only read about squirrels in books, and seen pictures and drawings. I imagined them to be about 3 feet tall! I saw my first live grey squirrel in Bournemouth's Alum Chine when I was about 12, and I was soooo disappointed to see how small they actually were, but relieved at the same time! Of course the red squirrel is about 1/4 of the size. My neighbour across the valley has promised not to touch ours. To him they are a nuisance as they eat all his bird food. I think it's a little like weeds - they are only weeds if they grow somewhere you don't want them.
