When young they grow pretty slowly, however, once they gain some trunk they can grow moderately fast...pushing up fronds all year. These trees are probably 12 years old. They have only been growing commonly in California for about 15 years. These trees were only discovered around 1982 growing in an isolated area in Darwin, Australia. The story of this tree is sad, however, has a good ending. (they were being over-exploited when first discovered)
