I just had to share this one as I think they are precious!! This is a mature bird, Janey. They are the smallest woodpecker we have.... next largest in size is the hairy woodpecker, then the redheaded, then the huge pileated wp's...Diohio has some amazing pics of the wp's...check them out, you'll really enjoy her great photography...

We've had very strong winds lately and I was thinking about what it would be like to look into my backyard and see my greenhouse GONE to the neighbours yard!~ LOL!...

Thanks Gilli... I have a pic I took last summer of a downy enjoying the insects in the mullein flower stock...when the stocks are dried and the seed is released derelict stems are an ideal hiding place for earwigs. I'm pretty sure that the downy in question is loading up on suet...don't think he's interested in seeds at all...

the wind was strong here yesterday and the clouds were whipping over the top of the hill. We are protected by the bungalows in the next road, and I didn't see many birds in the garden. It has been a bit calmer today with sunshine and I've planted a few pinks. The new greenhouse is tucked away in the corner so was out of the wind.

I do envy you your climate Linda!
