Had many great hols at Scarbergs when we were kids....loved it!

I have a cousin who lives at Scolby just outside Scarbourgh , I didn,t know her untill a couple of years ago , she invited us their and gave us a lovely tour of Scarbourgh , she had a beautiful garden , I asked her if they had a local best kept garden competition , she didn,t know but found out that there was and entered her garden in it .. and won.. she was thrilled .. .. back to that old question " is gardening in the blood " ?

You do Jacque , give it a go , youve got nothing to lose , everything to gain , my cousin was very surprised when I encouraged her , she didn,t think she was good enough .

Still a lot you would recognise Janey , work in and around the Scalby area Amy . Thats great that your cousin won as some truly lovely gardens and competition would have been very stiff.

Yes think like most thinks Amy no matter how well qualified if have no passion care or concern , doesnt count for much.

Yes Jacque do give it a go but check out the criteria for entering some can be very snooty and selective many do not have a category for wildlife gardens if this your passion - better share all your joy with us , so many here love it !

We don't have a 'best kept' competition in our village but every other year we have an open garden day. Anyone can open their garden, all proceeds go to local causes, doesn't matter how big or small the garden is. Its lovely to wander around and be 'nosey' - lots of interesting ideas and plants. There is also a plant stall on the green and I have obtained some bargains there too.

Like the idea of that Gee - less competitive as gardens are all our own personal spaces to do with as we wish. Well that said not sure I d want the neighbour turning his into a scrapyard but guess you get my drift ..

Thanks so much for this photo BB - in 1966 I spent a whole afternoon exploring this castle, on an Easter holiday to Scarborough with my family. Castles were my passion back then. Helmsley was my favourite in Yorkshire.

Thanks you Elke...the castle not changed much...just had some remedial repairs done....Helmsley still as popular as ever !
