What is it?

This plant was eaten by the tortoises as soon as it appeared last year. This year they have, thankfully, ignored it (so far!) I thought it was a hellebore but now I am not sure. Can you please identify it for me? There are no flowers (or buds) just the leaves.

Looks like a hellebore to me :) Not sure of the variety though.

Obviously not poisonous to tortoises, whatever it is. Lol.
