Umbrella Palm is native to Lord Howe Island...which is an Island off the eastern coast of Australia. Photo taken April 9, 2009.

The roots you see are from the large Ficus macrophylla - Moreton Bay Fig in the background.

Yes, I thought that's where the roots were coming from, but they must be very long roots, and unusually near the surface of the soil ?

They are extremely large trees with a very massive root system...the roots can surface and run several hundred feet from the tree. Very typical of Ficus trees.
