Slow worms........

Took the cover off one of the compost heaps today to find these 2 laying there in the warmth. That is some cat litter that I found in the back of the shed that they are snuggled on.......

They do look healthy, did they move on Milky, once disturbed?

Your Welcome Funky but you would have to collect them. No they didnt move on Potty, because Ray went and checked about 6 this evening and the 2 of them were still laying there............

Oh, lucky you, I would love some of these in my garden, they are so pretty, aren't they?

12 Apr, 2009

Pretty cool looking creatures. Are they good for the garden?

13 Apr, 2009

I would love them if the neighbors could handle my shreaks when i stumbled upon them. :-) There are no snakes here at all.

Milky:

They sure look like little snakes. I have many large worm in my garden...none ever as large as these. WOW!

Wonderful to see.

I confess that I dont particularly like them, and got quite a shock, when I lifted the cover off the compost heap. They were about 15 inches long each, and though they are good for the garden, I am used to seeing them a lot smaller. Im happier watching the toads hop accross the garden.............

I've never even seen a photo of slow worms, so thanks for that! I would probably squeak a bit if finding them caught me by surprise, but I like to think I'm made of sterner stuff, so would probably have a quick look around to see if anybody heard me, and then pretend to be really cool!

LOL Tosh.....that would be me too.
We have snakes here.....the only poisonous one is the rattlesnake. They are usually found out in the dry hot hills. I've seen garter snakes and bull snakes in the garden. I don't think we have slow worms here....salamanders sometimes but no slow worms....I'll have to google and see if they live in Canada anywhere.

Tosh and Gilli......I didnt actually squeak, but my god did I jump.....and take a step back to compose myself he he he ...............then covered them back up......

I thought they were garter snakes!...but found out a whole lot of interesting info thanks to you, Milky!... they are lizards without legs, they can blink(they have eyelids), they are live bearers..their young are born fully formed in a nice warm or sunny spot. Cats are their main danger. Don't think they exist in Canada...will have to check with Gilli to see if she found any here! oh almost forgot...they can shed their tails if caught ...but only once!

Well thanks for that Lori........I think I shall just leave them alone though...........

We don't have them in North America as far as I can tell. They are indiginous to Europe and Asia. Very interesting creatures. :o)

Looks too much like snakes for my comfort

14 Apr, 2009

Trouble is, only two and rather small. I would have expected more from an Essex person.

14 Apr, 2009

How big do you want them Toto....Ray measured them and the smallest of the 2 was 15 inches long.............

14 Apr, 2009

Milky:

I though they looked like some type of reptile. : > )

We have so many types of lizards and reptile type creatures here also.
They are so good for the environment as they eat many bugs.

14 Apr, 2009

Yes they are Andy.....and I dont mind them being there as long as I dont have to tough them.........

15 Apr, 2009

They do grow to a little over 18 inches as a norm, but here in my garden they grow to about 12ft. and eat a whole lot of unwanted pests. I'm saying no more.

15 Apr, 2009

You Big head..............ha ha ha You will get pimples on your tongue Toto.................or your nose will grow.................

15 Apr, 2009

Toto:

I think you may have a Boa constrictor in your garden! Be careful or it may eat you! lol!

LOL....Delonix....I think the Boa would find Toto extremely delicious!! Even with his big head and pimples on his tongue. LOL

Gilli:

That is very funny!

16 Apr, 2009

I'll show you all! I'll post a pic of my babies, just for Milky. Can't show you the bigger ones at the moment as they are just finishing a meal of unwanted visitors and you know how dodgy it is to approach them when they are eating. Very grumpy and dangerous!

16 Apr, 2009

Oh so its a slow worm length competition now is it?...............

16 Apr, 2009

Anything you can do I can do better. Or so the song says.

17 Apr, 2009

No you cant................he he he Remember your not far away he he he ..............

17 Apr, 2009

It's a good job there is an entire ocean between us.....I think Toto would be setting his slow worms on me.....Hee hee hee.

18 Apr, 2009

I couldn't do that Gilli. We have the "Dangerous Wild Animal act" over here so I have to confine them to the garden.
