This is one of the most commonly grown Chamaedorea species grown throughout Coastal California. It is super easy to grow and grows very quickly...which is unusual for most Chamaedorea. They also can grow very large under optimum conditions up to more than 30 feet/ 10 meters tall with hundred of stems.

Mushybanna:
This is not a very good specimen or pic of Chamaedorea costaricana. Usually the fronds are much larger and greener...I don't think this plant receives a lot of water, which they love.
Chamaedorea costaricana usually dies to the ground around freezing or just slightly below, however, may come back from the roots if the freeze is not too long...and the soil doesn't freeze.

Thanks Delonix1
So it could be used outside if kept well protected but would make a good indoor plant..

Mushybanna:
Even though they tolerate freezing temps...they are really very tender palms.
Most speices of Chamaedorea will tolerate freezing temps...however, only for a very short period of time (e.g. 1/2 hr - 1 hr). Even in California Chamaedorea species are limited to the mild coastal areas. There's only two somewhat hardy species: Chamaedorea radicalis and microspadix...these two species tolerate sub-freezing temps well...however, without snow.
