Panther:
Gorgeous breadfruit tree! I love these trees especially when they grow large.
These trees can't grow in San Diego...they are so super ultra-tropical, it isn't funny. If the temp goes below 60 degrees/ 16 degrees they will probably die.

Thanks Delonix, we have lots growing around in plantations here and in peoples yards as well because it's a common food source when in season. In some villages the sap is used as chewing gum by children....there you go...sugar free organic chewing gum!!

Have you ever eaten breadfruit chips? Since these trees are very widely grown in Hawaii. Breadfruit chips are commonly available for sale. I've actually heard of many of those uses except for the sap used for chewing gum. Interesting!
I thought about growing a breadfruit tree in the past...however, the first Santa Ana Winds - the plant would probably be burned to a crisp! LOL! I can't say with certainty (because I've been proven wrong too many times) that there's none growing in San Diego...I think is highly unlikely though.

Delonix, yes I have tried the chips its lovely. We have many ways of cooking breadfruit here as well, either boiled, fried, curried even coconut milk added to...
Sorry I forgot to mention that the sap has to harden and turn gummy before it is peeled off the bark for chewing, usually a cut in the bark of the tree is done and left for a few hours for the sap to settle. (I remember doing this many moons ago too when a child)

Very good breadfruit information. I'll have to try chewing the sap one day...when I can find a tree or when I'm visiting my family in Honolulu, HI.

I ate it when I was in Mauritius. I wish I could explain the taste. I can still feel it in my mouth. I liked the start of chewing it, very juicy and addictive, then all taste gone one is left with this chewy bit till one gets fedup chewing. LOL

One can buy it in England too.
