great pic, Andrew, i bought one of these last year, but i did'nt get any leaves quite as nice as this, am i right in thinking that not all of the leaves are varigated on this plant? i did some reading and discovered that some varigate in this way others remain green with sometimes a slight tinge. i did get some with a bit of a tinge and some great autumn colour but not as lovely as this, how old is this plant Andrew? is it to do with age do you think? i am hoping i may get some of these this year, at the moment mine is still in bud no leaves as yet fingers crossed

You are right majeek - the leaves are pretty variable and some years are better than others. One year, all the emerging leaves on mine got caught by a frost and the regrowth was all green for that season. Mine was planted in spring 1996 and is in semi shade rather than the full sun recommended in books (don't know whether this makes any difference though). I think the leaves improve as the plant gets older though

Thanks Andrew that makes me feel much better :-) mine is in full shade in the morning and winter months but full sun during the afternoon, from now onwards through the season. even though i did'nt get this wonderful vaigation last year it is still a very interesting plant. but i must say i am hopeful, we seem to have had what i would call a proper winter and spring, so hopefully summer will be the same which always makes things perform better in my experience. my lilac trees have been stunning this year, last year very dissapointing.
