Hi Jacque, I think its a Damselfly - looks like a Large Red Damselfly in my book. They appear from April - too early for a dragonfly.

Hi Jacque , sorry it,s been so long , i,ve been out !!

I must have the same book as Dawn I think it,s the Red damselfly .... Pyrrhosoma nymphula ....
There's another one similar ... Common sympetrum .... but I,m pretty sure it,s the first one ............

I agree Amy - my books says they have large black legs and he males have red eyes (maybe yours is a female Jacque), yellow bodies at first, growing gradually redder - 36mm in length. We're like detectives Amy, lol.

Hi Jacque, Amy is dead right. It is the Large Red Damsel Fly.
You can always tell the difference between a damsel and a dragon fly as the dragon fly has its wings at ninety degrees to its body when it is at rest whilst the damsel fly holds its wings parallel to its body when at rest.
